A brief history of Singing in Australia

As human beings, we SANG BEFORE we spoke. It is an INTRINSIC PART OF BEING HUMAN, and over the ages, in some cultures, we have closed this side of us down; in many cultures it is still very much a part of daily living.

As a society, and part of  “Singing for Health” , it is our mission to RECLAIM the dormant power of the VOICE; to release the voice, which is within us all and to feel good.  This  benefits of our own HEALTH, health in the workplace, and our society’s health at a national level.

As are our Voices, the power of SINGING and how it can benefit YOU and your life, will be different and unique to every person.

A Little About the Voice, our instrument, our body

  • Our Voice is a reflection of who we are on every level.

  • It is as unique as our finger print.

  • It is our ability to communicate to everyone in our lives, from our first breath.

  • It is fundamental to who we are and part of our survival.

As a human being, we are the musical instrument. (It is not external like for example a guitar that we play). It is therefore the most unique and wonderfully complex, and simultaneously very simple instrument “to play”.

We are all built to sing (whether we practice singing or not).

Everyone has the ability to express themselves.

Part of the “Singing for Health” mission is to create MORE spaces for everyone to have the opportunity to safely express themselves through singing and music.

Myths and mistruths

Because our Voice is so intrinsic to who we are as a human being, connected to our survival mechanism as a human being, it is something we have a very profound relationship with. Our voice, our self, can, when attacked or even jokingly critiqued (eg “you have a terrible voice” “please just mime to the words” “you are tone deaf”), can unconsciously retreat to safety/ shutdown; which often leads to saying: “I can’t sing” or “You don’t want to hear me sing”.

Australia at the moment, more people DON’T SING or see any value in it than do Of the people who “Don’t sing” it is mainly because they were once told as a child that “they couldn’t sing”

  • Community Choirs numbers have increased in Australia

  • A growing number of people who were told NOT to sing, got brave and are now  enjoying the HEALTH benefits of singing and participating in singing on a regular basis

  • You do not need to sing in tune or be a “good singer” to get all the health benefits of singing

  • You do not need to understand music, read music, sing in harmony or have any prior experience to join a Singing for Health Choir and enjoy FULL health benefits of singing
